  6. Acorn XChange - Bring out your Dead!

  8. Acorn Computers is launching a new scheme which offers up to UKP100 cash to UK
  9. schools for any computer traded in against selected Acorn 32-bit RISC
  10. computers.

  12. Under Acorn's XChange scheme, which runs from 24th May until 30th June, any
  13. make of computer - in any condition - can be offered up for either an A3020
  14. (floppy disc or hard disc model) or A5000 (2MB RAM/80MB hard disc) computer
  15. for UKP50 or UKP100 cash back respectively. The payment will be made by Acorn
  16. directly to the educational institution, regardless of the transaction
  17. arrangements between the school and dealer.

  19. The XChange scheme even allows schools to tie in with other schemes, such as
  20. Options - Acorn's rental programme - or to purchasers of  Discovery - a new
  21. system based on the A3020 aimed specifically at the primary education
  22. sector.

  24. Acorn's General Manager for Education, Peter Talbot explained that the
  25. scheme was designed to assist schools in the delivery of a future IT
  26. development strategy. "Acorn has dominated the educational computing market
  27. for over a decade. In that time period modern technology has moved forwards
  28. in leaps and bounds. Teachers and students increasingly need the power
  29. offered by a graphical multitasking environment and Acorn's 32-bit RISC
  30. machines operating under RISC OS 3.1 have now become the established
  31. educational standard offering a graphical user interface that is the
  32. preferred choice for both teachers, pupils and software developers alike.

  34. "We are launching this scheme now to enable schools to take advantage of
  35. these special offers in this peak buying period prior to installation of new
  36. machines and networks in schools over the summer holidays. Many schools have
  37. a number of old computers collecting dust in a cupboard somewhere. They
  38. could be Spectrums, ZX80s or 186 machines, for example; but we'll accept
  39. anything from a ZX80 to a Nimbus 486 pc!" he said.

  41. "Teachers are tired of struggling with tired old DOS technology.  We can
  42. offer them a desktop environment that is second to none in its ease of use
  43. and in its ability to offer powerful solutions at extremely attractive
  44. prices. We have specifically tied in this scheme with the purchase of the
  45. A3020 and A5000 models as we know these to be our most popular products in
  46. the primary and secondary education sectors respectively."
